Encouraging Ethical Behavior

Most authorities agree that there is room for improvement in business ethics. One of the most problematic questions raised in relation to business ethics is whether companies can be more ethical in the real world. The majority opinion on this issue suggests that government can, trade associations and individual companies, in fact, determine acceptable levels of ethical behavior.

The government can do so by law stricter rules. But rules require enforcement, and in many cases, if there is evidence of lack of enforcement of the ethical entrepreneurs tend to “slip something caught” without being. Increased regulation may help, but it is not yet the solution of the entire business ethics problems.

trade associations can and often do not provide ethical guidelines for its members. These organizations within particular industries in an excellent position to exert pressure on members that stoop to questionable business practices. However, the enforcement and authority vary from association to association. Furthermore, just because professional associations exist for the benefit of its members, harsh measures may self-destructive.

The employees can more easily determine and adopt acceptable behavior when the company they have a “Code of Ethics. Such codes are perhaps the most effective way to promote ethical behavior. A code of ethics is a written guide for ethical behavior is acceptable and that a uniform policy outlines, standards and penalties for infringements. Because you know what workers are expected of them and what will happen if they the rules, violating a code of ethics goes a long way towards promoting ethical behavior. However, codes can not possibly cover all situations. Companies must also create an environment in which employees recognize the importance of compliance with the written code. Managers need direction through the promotion of communication, modeling and active promotion of ethical decision making, apart from investing in training employees to be taken for ethical decisions.

Sometimes, even employees who can act ethically be difficult to want to do this. Unethical practices may be rooted in an organization. Employees with high personal ethics may be a controversial step as “whistleblowing”. Whistle blows the information to the press or government officials about unethical practices in an organization. Whistle blowing could have averted disaster and prevented needless deaths in the Challenger space shuttle, for example. How could the people about life issues and happen to have known she was? can whistle blew on the other serious repercussions for the workers, those who sometimes waves lose their jobs done.
